The New Republic

I served as the interim art director and sole designer for four months during a transitional time for the magazine. I led the job search for permanent art and production directors. And I assigned illustrations that won AI-AP Gold medals in 2018.

Virginia Quarterly Review

I did all art direction, design and production for this award-winning journal from the University of Virginia. The magazine was nominated for a National Magazine Award for General Excellence while I was there. 

The greatest challenge of the job was finding illustrators and photographers willing to work for a fraction of typical editorial rates for a magazine on a tight budget.

I also occasionally assigned and art directed photo shoots.

In a pinch, I also did some illustrations and photo-illustrations myself.
